Why Your Singing Practice Efforts Fall Short on Stage (and What to Do About It)

Why is that sometimes, no matter how much time and effort we put into our singing practice…

that when we get on stage or in front of an audience - it all falls apart?

The notes that once felt easy feel tense or shaky.

The warmth and resonance we were hearing in the practice room has disappeared.

And the emotional expression we’d been able to tap into is nowhere to be found.

Because the only place we can actually practice performing is in a performance.

So what can you do to help yourself have better quality performances and integrate what you’ve worked on in practice into new performance contexts?

Let me break down the following tips in the video below

  1. Acknowledge when something is new. Recognise that you might be an intermediate or advanced singer but you can still be a beginner performer. (5:51)

  2. Adjust your intentions and expectations accordingly. (7:21)

  3. Where possible, build your tolerance for vulnerability and visibility by stretching into those spaces in practice. (10:52)

  4. Evaluate with compassion and recognise your protective mechanisms. (14:19)
