How Perfectionism Sabotages Your Voice and Your Technique (and what to do about it).

Perhaps because of the whole "practice makes perfect" idea, many of us think perfectionism would be HELPFUL when learning to sing.

And sure, when you're learning something new, you're trying to tweak things and hone our skills.

BUT perfectionism can unfortunately derail all that technique you've been working hard to instil.

It means you go into panic or over-thinking mode when you perform.

And pulls the joy from underneath you, sometimes leaving you to wonder why you started doing it in the first place.

If you've been experiencing this for a long time, it can feel impossible to shift.

But trust me, there IS light at the end of the tunnel.

And I created a video to walk you through it.

A FEW WAYS PERFECTIONISM CAN SABOTAGE YOUR VOCAL TECHNIQUE

  • Pushing, hesitating or sliding on onsets

  • Flicking into a “safer” register when you don’t trust you can hit a certain note

  • Holding back or slowing down your breath

  • Skipping over “unimportant notes” (especially right before one you think is “hard” or “high”)

STEPS TO UNRAVEL FROM THE STORIES OF PERFECTIONISM

  • Repair your relationship to your perfectionism/inner critic

  • Build your capacity to hold and experience sensation in your body

  • Gently allow yourself to taste the beauty in surrender in situations that feel safe

  • Integrate the belief “my voice is a gift for me FIRST”

If you're ready to step out of the shadow of your perfectionism and into a more expressive and joyful relationship with your voice…
